Advanced E-bike Technology

Which range suits your use?

The battery of your electric bicycle is subject to a lot of innovation and can be compactly built into the main tube of a frame by using the latest techniques. VanDijck has different variations and follows the latest standards. This means that smart battery management systems are used, call it safety, because that is paramount. Depending on the model, VanDijck offers batteries in various capacity levels. The capacity of the battery of an electric bicycle is indicated in Ah (Ampere-hour) and Wh (Watt-hour):

The range depends on the environment in which you cycle, weather conditions, level of assistance, gear shifting method and condition of the e-bike, such as tire pressure. When you e-bike in a hilly environment on an electric bicycle with a mid-engine, you have access to extra support. The smart system in the e-bike senses how hard you are pedaling and adjusts the support accordingly. That's the beauty of a VanDijck bicycle, help when needed. Another important factor is the extent to which you use the system. Are you going to cycle at top speed or are you pedaling yourself? Globally, the following range applies per battery:

Battery in the frame
24.5 Ah (882Wh) ~ 120 – 220 km
22.4 Ah (806Wh) ~ 110 – 200 km
18.2Ah (655Wh) ~ 100 – 170 km
17.4 Ah (628Wh) ~ 100 – 160 km
14.0 Ah (500Wh) ~ 80 – 120km

Battery in the rear carrier
17.4 Ah (628Wh) ~ 100 – 160 km
15.6 Ah (562Wh) ~ 90 – 140 km
13.0 Ah (468Wh) ~ 70 – 120 km
10.4 Ah (374Wh) ~ 60 – 90 km

VanDijck e-bikes come with an excellent charger. Depending on the residual capacity, charging can take up to 4 hours. When the battery is completely empty, the cells are usually reset first, after which the charging process is started. A charger is available in two or three amps. The first, depending on cell reset and capacity, has a charge time of five to eight hours. The three-amp charger does the same thing in three to five hours.

Front wheel engine vs mid engine

VanDijck offers electric bicycles with a front-wheel motor and electric bicycles with a mid-engine. Our front wheel motor e-bikes are controlled by a rotation sensor and start assisting when the pedal is pressed down. This signal is forwarded to the motor, after which you receive a nice support. You can choose the support level of the electric bicycle with front wheel motor and you can easily adjust this via the display. The support of the front wheel motor stops when you stop pedaling or when you have reached the maximum speed. An electric bicycle with a front-wheel motor is experienced as very pleasant and is generally lighter in weight.

An e-bike mid-engine is more powerful than a front-wheel motor. It is therefore easier to cycle in hilly terrain without the system being heavily loaded. Because the weight of the motor is placed centrally in the e-bike, cycling feels almost the same as a regular bicycle. VanDijck uses step sensors. When you put (more) force on the pedal, the system increases the support proportionally.

Bright color displays

You can view all information about your electric bicycle and its use on your display. VanDijck uses various displays, including models that even display the information in clear colour. Standard displays are, for example: the total distance driven, the speed you are cycling and the distance of the ride. VanDijck also has a handy walking assistant that provides light support for your electric bicycle while walking.

The residual capacity of the battery and the energy mode in which you are cycling are also displayed. The display often also contains a level for the dealer to make advanced settings. Some displays are equipped with a USB input. Characteristic of the displays used by VanDijck is that they are clear to read and easy to operate.

Safe braking on your electric bicycle

Reliable brakes belong on an electric bicycle, because with an e-bike you can easily reach a speed of up to 25 km/h and that is fast - especially in a city. Brakes that dose excellently and work well in all conditions. And from reliable brands with proven quality such as Magura, Shimano and Tektro. We distinguish between: maintenance-friendly roller brakes, high-tech disc brakes and hydraulic rim brakes.

Roller brakes
A roller brake consists of an external disk and an internal disk. The internal disc contains small steel rollers that, when the brake lever is pulled, are rolled out and pressed against the outer disc. As a result, they brake pleasantly and also, if necessary, powerfully. This environment is lubricated with grease and is therefore wear-resistant and maintenance-friendly.

Hydraulic rim brake
As the name suggests, this brake works by means of brake pads that are pressed against the rim edge. The rim edges are now sharpened so that braking happens evenly and little or no vibrations are passed on. The hydraulics are located in the braking system itself. No brake cables are used to control the brake, but oil is used. The nice thing about hydraulic brakes is the dosability. There is no resistance when you squeeze the brake, which an inner and outer cable does. The disadvantage of a rim brake is that both the brake pad and the rim wear out.

Disc brakes
Disc brakes are very powerful and easy to dose. The technology comes from the motorcycle and automotive industry. Very tested and suitable in all weather conditions. The disc brake is mounted against the hub on the side and can be recognized by the metal disc. There you will also find the hydraulically operated brake calipers from the steering wheel. This contains the brake pads which, when pressure is applied to them, exert pressure on both sides of the disc. This slows down your e-bike. The brake pads are easy to change.

When riding an e-bike equipped with hydraulic rim or disc brakes for the first time, start with a few light brakes so that you get to know the braking force. You will notice that you get used to it quickly and you will experience how pleasant the brakes really work.

Put your bike in the right gear

A correctly selected gear has a positive effect on energy consumption. For example, the system does not have to use its full capacity for comfortable support and this has a positive effect on your range. It is best to opt for a low gear when driving off. Your e-bike then responds sooner because of the faster rotation. The rear hub and chain are also subjected to less stress, resulting in less wear.

We distinguish hub gears, stepless or with 7 or 8 steps and derailleur gears. A hub gear is closed and sealed. A chain guard can also be mounted, making the electric bicycle less vulnerable to external substances. The derailleur gear 'runs' the lightest but is slightly more vulnerable.

The positive effect of a correctly selected gear also has a physical effect. By choosing a lighter gear at the start, your leg muscles do not have to work hard, which means less pressure on your knee joint. A lighter gear – read slightly higher rotation – also contributes to a better removal of waste and can therefore be seen as the effect of a light massage.

E-bike with belt drive

VanDijck was one of the first to introduce the belt-driven electric bicycle. These electric bicycles are equipped with a revolutionary belt-driven system to replace the chain. The belt is made of UV and weather resistant polyurethane around a carbon core. It consists of one piece and is provided with 'tooth shapes' that exactly match the gears. There is no stretch in the belt.

All this makes the system very light, durable, quiet and clean. Lubrication is not necessary and dirt does not stick to it. What remains is to enjoy the surroundings.

VanDijck uses the Gates belt drive. Gates is also used by a well-known American engine supplier. The technology is far-reaching. The cleanly CNC-cut rear sprocket, for example, is equipped with a silent click-gear system, which ensures that no noises are generated when the drive is engaged and coasted. The belt also stays in track due to a unique toothing. In combination with the weather-resistant belt, this ensures many kilometers of quiet e-bike fun.
